Salt often gets a bad rap in health circles, but like so many foods today it’s the highly processed and refined version that is bad for us. Did you know that salt in it’s natural form contains 84 minerals, which together help balance the body? In this natural state salt can actually help to restore hydration levels rather than dehydrate us. Its because of this that salt is an important consideration when exercising. We need to replenish our natural salts that are lost due to excessive sweating. Without the natural salts our body does not hydrate effectively. A simple way to make your own sports hydration drink is to add a very small amount of natural salt to your water.
A lot of the processed salt we consume is ‘hidden’ in processed foods. Keeping things fresh and simple is always the best policy – that way you know exactly what you are eating. We do need some salt in our diet – sparingly adding sea salt to home cooked meals is the best way.
